South of Tunisia, the Isle of Djerba is known as the ‘Polynesia of the Mediterranean’, where over 10,000 palm trees rise from the sea like a mirage, ringed by miles of superb sand beaches. And the weather is perfect for year-round windsurfing.

The best beaches are on the northeast coast, but most are privately owned by the resort hotels in the Zone Touristique, with the exception of a few stretches such as the Plage des 5,000 Ans (Beach of 5,000 Years), 8km (5 miles) from Houmt Souk, and, further on, the Plage Municipale (Municipal Beach). The quieter beaches are between Aghir and el-Kantara.

Nabeul beach is long with beautiful sand in this, the Tunisian Saint-Tropez. There are also excellent opportunities for water sports such as paragliding, jet-skiing or banana boats, as well as camel or horseback riding. Nearby Nabeul is famed for its beautiful pottery and ceramics, and has a heaving market on a Friday, ideal for picking up a bargain. Also, only 2km (1.2 miles) away is Dar Chaabane, a village noted for its beautiful stone carvings.

A ribbon of golden beaches, still unspoiled by the masses of annual tourists. The water is as clear as crystal, and each beach is totally safe. There are not many attractions in this area bar the surrounding sleepy villages, but are perfect if you are looking to escape to somewhere low-key. It is also a noteworthy spot for birdwatchers, with many rare species on display during the annual trans-Mediterranean migrations.

The long white sandy beach of Boujaffar stretches from the centre of Sousse to Port El Kantaoui, 10km (6 miles) away. In summer the beaches are packed with holidaymakers until late at night, when Tunisian families come to enjoy a picnic and the cooler air. A wide selection of watersports is available all along the beach including paragliding, windsurfing, waterskiing and jetskiing.

Located on the eastern coast of Tunisia, Kerkennah’s gently sloping shore means the sea remains shallow for yards and yards out, making the beaches here among the most child-friendly in the Mediterranean.

If you are in the Kerkennah Islands, you are looking to relax and escape. The island's main quality is that it is tranquil and unspoiled, with not much monopolising your time apart from exploring the sleepy villages, or the odd spot of birdwatching. You can cycle around the two main islands (joined by a causeway) and seek out the most isolated beaches; stroll north from the main resort at Sidi Frej to find the remains of an old Ottoman fort, or spend a day on a boat with local fishermen hauling in some denizens of the deep for your supper - octopus is the local speciality so try your luck!
