Tunisia is a gentle introduction to North Africa, with its friendly Berber people and temperate climate. We traverse this diverse country from the Mediterranean to the Sahara, visiting spectacular Roman sites, mountainous fortified kasbahs and the shady forests of the north. We visit Kairouan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the area around Matmata, a dramatic landscape often used by Hollywood, also home to a number of troglodyte dwellings. Heading south, the Chott el Jerid salt lake appears mirage-like against the sand, and we enjoy the unforgettable experience of a camel trek into the Sahara to sleep amongst the silent dunes.

Surrounded by fascinating oases, and better known as ‘the gateway to the Sahara’, Pegase of Douz is located in the extreme south of Tunisia. It’s strategic position as the ‘last outpost’, but near places of interest such as Lake Chott El Jerid, the troglodyte village of Matmata, the Ksar Ghilane dune, the mountain oasis Chebika, and the great oasis at Tozeur make Pegase the perfect place to start your Tunisian adventure.

The oasis at Douz, up until not long ago,  was an important passage for the desert caravan trains that passed through here, and, despite the GPS system that has now replaced the ancient navigation-by-starlight used by the desert nomads, Douz has not lost its charm. It holds one of the largest oases in Tunisia, as well as almost all of the country’s date production (a major Tunisian export) which the area is now famous for.

The exceptional food, the warmth of the people, the exceptional year-round climate makes Douz, and its surrounding region, a favourite destination for any traveller who seeks the exotic. Pegase offers, nestled in amongst the camel treks and camping excursions, a 'baptism of the air' - a 15-minute flight in a microlight that gives you a bird's eye view of palm trees and camel trains for £18, or, for the speed-freaks, they hire out quad bikes for £40 an hour. No one with a mental age of 16 can pass up this opportunity to go bouncing and hurtling over the dunes. Quad bikes travel in packs with an experienced leader.
